Anyone familiar with Steven Covey’s “Seven Habits” will have heard this phrase many times. It is especially important in recruitment.
Too many times we have seen firms think “Oh, we need a new Property Manager – let’s advertise for one!” They then reuse the same advertisement they used last time to find a new PM (regardless of whether the role/business has changed), expecting this to work the same way.
However, this is the time to pause and reflect:
- Is the Property Manager they need this time exactly the same person they needed last time?
- Or worse, is the reason they are getting the wrong staff and suffering high turnover because they are not defining what they really need and – as a result – ending up with the same wrong fit every time?
However, is the Property Manager they need this time exactly the same person they needed last time?
Or worse, is the reason they are getting the wrong staff and suffering high turnover because they are not defining what they really need and – as a result – ending up with the same wrong fit every time?
Instead of repeating bad processes, begin with an honest and thorough definition of what you want:
- What makes your business/this job/your style/culture/opportunity different from your competitors?
- What attributes do you really want/need in this new person?
- What will make them want to join your business?
- What skills/experience/attributes do you really need in this new hire?
- What is in it for them?
Then, and only then, write your advertisement.
If you begin with the end in mind your chances of finding the right new staff member are greatly increased and you avoid more of the turmoil and disruption turnover can create.
